Berat

The Thousand Windows
Heritage Gems
Portrait

Berat is called the town of a thousand windows because its Ottoman houses climb the hillside in tiers with large upper-storey windows facing the river, each above the roof of the one below. The castle at the top is still inhabited, with families living inside the walls among Byzantine churches, and Albania's isolation until 1991 meant nothing was replaced.
