Lake Louise
in Banff
Portrait
Tom Wilson reached the lake in 1882, guided by the Stoney Nakoda man Edwin Hunter, and called it Emerald; it was renamed in 1884 for Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Governor General. The Canadian Pacific opened a log chalet of thirty by fifty feet on the shore in 1890, it burned in 1893, and the four-hundred-room chateau grew out of the rebuilding.
This is an estate, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
