Columbus found these islands full of turtles and named them Las Tortugas, but the name that stuck came from the caiman, and for three centuries they were a place ships stopped to take on meat. A handful of statutes in the 1960s did the rest: over a hundred thousand companies are now registered on an island of some seventy thousand people.
