The Oracle Bones
Ancient Cities
Portrait

In 1899 a scholar noticed ancient characters on dragon bones sold as medicine, and the source was traced to Anyang — the Shang capital, where oracle bones inscribed with the earliest known Chinese writing had been ploughed up for years. Around 150,000 have been recovered, recording royal divinations from the thirteenth century BC, and they are the direct ancestor of the script still in use.
