Gaochang
Walls of Karakhoja
Gateway town: Turpan
Portrait
Gaochang was a Uyghur kingdom's capital and a Buddhist centre of thirty thousand people, its five-kilometre walls enclosing monasteries, a palace and a grid of streets, all built from the earth underfoot. Donkey carts run the perimeter; the last two hours of daylight are the ones to take of daylight, when the walls turn the colour of the Flaming Mountains behind them.
