Jiaohe stands on a leaf-shaped plateau between two rivers, and its streets, houses and Buddhist stupas were cut downward into the loess instead of being raised on it — there is almost no masonry in the whole city. The central avenue is for either end of the day:; the Turpan depression is one of the hottest places in China and the light is punishing at noon.
