The Bund's banks and trading houses were built by foreign powers between 1860 and 1930; the towers facing them across the river went up on farmland after 1990. Stand on the waterfront at dusk with a century on one bank and three decades on the other, then walk inland into the plane-tree lanes of the former French Concession, where the city keeps its domestic scale.
