Quarter · China
Former French Concession
in Shanghai
Portrait
France administered this ground from 1849 to 1943 and zoned it low, wide and planted, which is why the plane trees are ninety years old and the lane houses behind them survived the towers. The trees are now protected by the city that inherited them, and pruning one requires a permit.
This is a quarter, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
