The Concession Streets
Portrait
After 1860 nine powers held concessions here — British, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Austro-Hungarian, Italian and Belgian — and each built in its own manner, so that a walk of two kilometres crosses Victorian brick, Beaux-Arts stone and an Italian quarter with a piazza. The result is the strangest architectural sequence in China, and the city is half an hour from Beijing by rail.
