Xidi was founded by descendants of a Tang emperor and grew rich on merchants who traded salt and timber far away and came home to build — over a hundred Ming and Qing houses survive, with carved wooden lintels and horse-head gables designed to stop fire spreading between roofs. The memorial archway of 1578 at the entrance was one of thirteen.
