Where Chinese Wine Began

Zhang Bishi, a Chinese businessman returning from Southeast Asia, founded Changyu here in 1892 and imported five hundred thousand European vine cuttings, creating the country's first modern winery; its underground cellar, dug over eleven years, still holds oak casks from the period. The coast around Yantai now grows most of China's cabernet.
