Albania

Albania's three entries survived by isolation, which is an uncomfortable thing to record but the accurate one. Four decades of closure left Berat and Gjirokastër with Ottoman-era townscapes that neighbouring countries modernised away, and left Butrint's Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers undug and unbuilt over. The country contributes preservation achieved by circumstance rather than by policy.
