Argentina's entries run the length of a continent and change character with latitude. Buenos Aires took six million immigrants between 1880 and 1930 and built a French-styled centre on beef and grain money; Mendoza is a desert that grows wine on Andean meltwater running in channels down every street; Bariloche was built to look Swiss by settlers who were; and Ushuaia sits at fifty-four degrees south with nothing beyond but ocean and ice.
