Belgium's entries turn on trade that ended and memory that did not. Bruges gave finance the word bourse and was preserved by the silting of its channel to the sea; Antwerp took the trade and has been a diamond centre for five centuries; Ghent's weavers revolted so often that Charles V made their leaders parade with nooses. Ypres was rebuilt from pre-war photographs, and buglers have sounded the Last Post there every evening since 1928.
