Bermuda

Bermuda is not in the Caribbean — it sits alone in the North Atlantic, a thousand kilometres off North Carolina, and its two atlas entries divide the island between the two things it has been. St George's is the older: founded in 1612 by the survivors of a wreck bound for Virginia and lived in without a break since, the oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the New World, with lanes still too narrow for the cars in them. Hamilton, the capital since 1815, is the other Bermuda — pastel warehouses along Front Street and one of the largest insurance and reinsurance markets on earth behind them. Both are within twenty minutes of each other on an island twenty-one miles long, which is the point: the distance here is historical, not geographical.
