Canada
Canada enters the atlas twice over, as a country of liveable cities and as one of wilderness with a hotel at the end of it. Its mountain resorts were built by a railway that needed reasons for people to ride west, and Banff became the first Canadian national park in 1885 after three workmen found a hot spring and claimed it, which the government settled by taking the land instead. The French inheritance supplies the only walled city north of Mexico; the Pacific coast supplies gardens that work because the rain never stops.
