Chile
Chile is four thousand kilometres long and never more than a few hundred wide, and its entries are what that produces: the driest desert on earth, where the absence of water vapour made room for the world's largest radio telescope array; a capital in a basin that traps its own smog; a port of painted funiculars; and, three and a half thousand kilometres out in the Pacific, the most isolated inhabited island there is.
