Croatia's coast is Venetian in fabric and Roman underneath. Dubrovnik kept independence from 1358 to 1808 by paying tribute to everyone who threatened it, and built two kilometres of wall regardless; Rovinj was an island until the channel was filled in 1763; Split grew inside a retired emperor's palace and is still living in it.
