Ecuador
Ecuador contributes two colonial centres that were inscribed among the first World Heritage sites anywhere. Quito's historic core, listed in 1978 in the very first cohort, is among the largest and least altered in the Americas and sits at 2,850 metres; Cuenca is the smaller, later-listed one, laid out on a grid ordered from Spain in 1557. The country's case rests on preservation rather than on scale.
