French Polynesia
French Polynesia contributes the lagoon that the overwater bungalow was invented on, and the port everyone passes through to reach it. Bora Bora's lagoon is a drowned caldera ringed by motu, and the first bungalows on stilts were built in these islands in the 1960s by three Californians running a small hotel; Papeete is the administrative and shipping centre, and is not what anyone comes for. The atlas records both, and the difference.
