Hungary contributes a capital that was two separate towns until 1873 and built a parliament of 691 rooms for an empire that dissolved forty years later, sitting on a hundred thermal springs whose Ottoman baths are still in daily use. Pécs is the counterweight: a fourth-century Christian burial complex underground and a mosque that became a church and kept its mihrab.
