Israel's three entries could not be more unlike each other. Jerusalem is sacred to three faiths and administered in a status quo agreement so exact that a ladder has stood unmoved on a façade since the eighteenth century. Acre holds a complete crusader city sealed under the Ottoman town above it and excavated only from the 1990s. Tel Aviv was founded on sand dunes in 1909 and holds the largest concentration of Bauhaus buildings anywhere.
