Jordan
Jordan holds a city carved into rock by a people who controlled the incense trade, and very little else needs saying about why it is here. Petra was known to Bedouin throughout and reintroduced to Europe by a Swiss traveller in 1812 who reached it in disguise. Amman supplies the working modern capital with a Roman theatre in the middle of it, and Aqaba the country's single stretch of coast — twenty-seven kilometres, sharing a gulf with three other states.
