Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan's two entries are opposites by design. Almaty sits under the mountains where the wild ancestor of the domestic apple still grows — genetic work traces every cultivated apple to these forests, and the city's older name means father of apples. Astana was moved to the steppe in 1997, to a provincial town where winter reaches minus forty, and commissioned along a single ceremonial axis.
