Laos
Laos holds a former royal capital that a war left largely untouched and a present one that does very little. Luang Prabang sits at a river confluence with its monasteries intact and the dawn alms round still walked daily; Vientiane is among the quietest capitals in Asia, which visitors write about as charm and residents experience as economics. The pair is small, and the atlas does not inflate it.
