Morocco supplies the atlas with medinas at three different scales and a coast built to a foreign plan. Fez holds the oldest continuously operating degree-granting institution in the world inside nine thousand lanes; Tetouan was rebuilt by refugees from Granada and kept their street patterns; Essaouira was laid out by a French captive on European fortification principles, which is why a Moroccan port has straight streets.
