Nepal's pair is the valley and the view. Kathmandu holds seven monument zones inscribed as a single World Heritage site, much of it damaged in the 2015 earthquake and rebuilt with the original timber where it could be recovered; Pokhara sits below the Annapurna massif with an eight-thousand-metre wall visible from the lakeside and functions as the country's trekking gateway. One is a city, one is a base camp with a town around it.
