Slovenia's entries are small and deliberate. Ljubljana was largely redesigned by one architect after the 1895 earthquake — Jože Plečnik drew the bridges, the market colonnade, the embankments and the library as a single work in a personal classicism with no equivalent anywhere. Bled's island church sits in a glacial lake reached only by a flat-bottomed pletna, rowed standing by oarsmen from twenty-three families holding the right since 1740.
