Syria

Syria's two entries both claim to be among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, and both claims are serious. Damascus has been settled for some eleven thousand years and its Umayyad Mosque was in turn a temple and a cathedral; Aleppo's covered souq ran for thirteen kilometres before the fighting of 2012 burned much of it. The atlas describes what was there and dates the damage rather than writing around it.
