Coffee originated in Ethiopia, and the ceremony — green beans roasted, ground and brewed in front of you, served in three rounds with incense burning — takes an hour and is a social obligation rather than a drink. Addis sits at 2,355 metres, one of the highest capitals in the world, and Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old hominin, is in the national museum.
