Faubourg Saint-Germain

in Paris
Portrait

The nobility built here after Louis XIV took the court to Versailles and the Marais went out of fashion, putting up hôtels particuliers with courtyards in front and gardens behind, hidden from the street by design. Most are now ministries and embassies, which is why the quarter is quiet in a way no other central Paris district manages.

This is a quarter, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
