Grunewald

in Berlin
Portrait

Villas were sold here from 1889 on plots large enough that the forest was never entirely cleared, and the quarter spent the twentieth century on the wrong side of two different lines without being destroyed by either. The lake at its edge freezes hard enough to walk on, which residents do, in a city where almost nothing else is that quiet.

This is a quarter, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
