Bremen has been a self-governing city-state for over six hundred years and remains one of Germany's sixteen federal states, with a population smaller than many districts. Its market square holds a Renaissance town hall, a 1404 statue of Roland guaranteeing the city's liberties, and a bronze of the four Grimm musicians who, in the story, never actually arrive.
