Düsseldorf

The Königsallee runs a kilometre either side of an old town moat with plane trees along it, and the eastern side carries the flagship stores while the western holds the banks — a division locals treat as a fact of nature. Behind them, the city hosts the trade fairs that supply most of German fashion retail, and Gehry's leaning buildings in the harbour are the modern counterweight.
