Nuremberg

Holy Roman Emperors held their first imperial diet here by custom and kept the crown jewels in the city for four centuries, which made Nuremberg the empire's ceremonial centre without ever being its capital. The Nazis chose it for their rallies for the same historical reason, and the Allies chose it for the trials in 1945–46 because the courthouse survived and the symbolism was exact.
