Quedlinburg
The Half-Timbered Thousand
Portrait
Quedlinburg has around two thousand timber-framed buildings from the fourteenth century onward, an unbroken sequence of the technique's development, because the town was poor and East German planning had other priorities. The abbey church on the hill holds the graves of Henry the Fowler and his queen, and a treasury looted by an American officer in 1945 and recovered in 1990.
