Völklingen

Ironworks as Monument
Industrial Heritage
Portrait

The Völklingen ironworks closed on a single day in 1986 and was listed by UNESCO eight years later as the only intact integrated ironworks from the height of the industrial age — the blowing hall, the coking plant and the six blast furnaces stand as the last shift left them, and visitors walk the charging platform sixty metres up. Nothing was cleaned or restored, which is the point.
