Elounda
Cretan Calm
Portrait
The bay is sheltered by Spinalonga, a Venetian fortress island that served as a leper colony until 1957 and is now the most visited site in eastern Crete. The resorts along this shore built Greek luxury tourism in the 1970s; boats leave for the island each morning, then use the afternoon for the salt-flat water, which is the calmest on the north coast.
