Pylos

The palace above the bay burned around 1200 BC, and the fire did what no archivist could — it baked the unfired clay tablets hard and kept them, leaving the largest Linear B archive found anywhere. The accounts of a kingdom are legible precisely because the kingdom was destroyed, and in the bay below, Navarino in 1827 was the last great battle fought entirely under sail.
