Himeji

The White Heron Castle
Fortress Cities
Portrait

Himeji was completed in 1609 with a defensive maze of gates, spiral approaches and dead ends designed so attackers would be exposed for as long as possible — and it was never tested. It survived the Meiji demolitions, an American firebombing that levelled the city around it, and the 1995 earthquake; the white plaster was restored in 2015 to a brightness that startled everyone.
