Street · Japan
Shinsaibashi-suji
in Osaka
Portrait
Six hundred metres of covered arcade that has been a shopping street since the seventeenth century, roofed in the twentieth and never widened. Osaka merchants built it and the roof is the reason it works: rain does not stop trade here, which is the whole argument for an arcade.
This is a street, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
