The name means silver mint: the shogunate moved its silver coinage here in 1612 and the district kept the word after the mint left. It burned in 1872 and was rebuilt in brick by an English engineer as a demonstration of what the new Japan would look like, and the ground beneath it has been among the most expensive in the world ever since.
