The aqueduct was funded in the 1720s by the Marqués de la Villa del Villar, reportedly at the request of Capuchin nuns who needed clean water, and its seventy-four arches run 1,280 metres at up to twenty-three metres high. The conspiracy that launched Mexican independence met in a house here in 1810, and the corregidora who warned the plotters is on the currency.
