Teotihuacan
Avenue of the Dead
Gateway town: Mexico City
Portrait
Teotihuacan held perhaps a hundred and twenty-five thousand people by AD 500, laid out on a grid around the Avenue of the Dead, and it was already a ruin when the Aztecs found it and gave it the name we use — the place where the gods were created. Climb the Pyramid of the Sun early, then walk to the Palace of Quetzalpapálotl for the painted interiors that most visitors skip.
