Volubilis

The Farthest Mosaics
Lost Cities & Ruins
Gateway town: Meknès
Portrait

Volubilis grew rich on olive oil at the empire's edge and kept working under Berber rule long after Rome left; its floor mosaics lie uncovered where they were laid, and the olive presses are still in the ground. Late afternoon turns the stone gold, against the Zerhoun hills, and pair it with Moulay Idriss two kilometres away.
