Granada, Nicaragua

Colonial on the Lake
Iconic Villages
Portrait

Founded in 1524 on Lake Nicaragua, Granada was sacked repeatedly by pirates coming up the San Juan river from the Caribbean, and in 1856 the American adventurer William Walker, who had made himself president of Nicaragua, burned it as he fled and left a sign reading here was Granada. It was rebuilt in the same colours, and the volcano Mombacho stands behind it.
