Lagos was crowded, coastal and Yoruba, and after the civil war Nigeria chose a site in the middle of the country — ethnically neutral ground — for a new capital, formally moving in 1991. The plan by Kenzo Tange runs a central axis from Aso Rock, a 400-metre monolith, down past the National Mosque and the National Christian Centre placed deliberately opposite each other.
