Chan Chan covered twenty square kilometres of mud brick as the Chimú capital until the Inca took it around 1470, and it survives only because this desert coast gets a few millimetres of rain a year — El Niño events are now its chief threat. Walk the Tschudi palace to see friezes of fish and seabirds repeated along walls three storeys high.
