Chan Chan

The Adobe Metropolis
Lost Cities & Ruins
Gateway town: Trujillo
Portrait

Chan Chan covered twenty square kilometres of mud brick as the Chimú capital until the Inca took it around 1470, and it survives only because this desert coast gets a few millimetres of rain a year — El Niño events are now its chief threat. Walk the Tschudi palace to see friezes of fish and seabirds repeated along walls three storeys high.
