The tower where Ayala and Makati Avenues meet was the control tower of Manila's airport in 1937, and the two avenues beneath it were its runways. The Ayala family turned the surrounding farmland into the country's financial district from 1948 onward, so the street plan of the richest square kilometre in the Philippines still traces an aerodrome.
