Quinta do Lago

in Almancil
Portrait

The estate is named for a lake that did not exist when the name was chosen — André Jordan bought the pine wood in the early 1970s and dug one — and what the land actually held came out in 1984, when the São Lourenço course works uncovered and partly destroyed a Roman salting works with five rock-cut tanks and an Islamic village of five house clusters with seventy-five burials. Ana Margarida Arruda excavated it across three campaigns and published it in 2017; the tanks are still degrading beside the South course.

This is an estate, not an entry in the atlas. It resolves upward to the city that holds it.
